Background of the Study
Indigenous healing institutions have long been integral to the cultural heritage and healthcare systems in many Nigerian communities. In Akure North Local Government Area, Ondo State, these traditional healing practices coexist with modern healthcare delivery, offering complementary approaches to wellness (Akin, 2023). Indigenous healers employ a holistic approach that incorporates spiritual, herbal, and ritualistic methods, addressing both physical and psychosocial dimensions of health. Recent research suggests that these practices not only provide accessible healthcare solutions but also contribute to cultural continuity and community trust (Olayinka, 2024). As modern healthcare faces challenges such as high costs and limited accessibility, indigenous healing institutions offer a valuable alternative, especially in rural and underserved areas. However, integration of traditional and modern healthcare systems remains limited due to regulatory, educational, and epistemological differences (Fadare, 2025). This study explores how indigenous healing institutions influence modern healthcare delivery by examining their roles, benefits, and potential for integration. The inquiry aims to provide insights that can inform policy and foster a more holistic healthcare system that leverages the strengths of both traditional and contemporary practices.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized benefits of indigenous healing institutions, their integration into modern healthcare delivery in Akure North remains minimal. The persistence of regulatory barriers, skepticism from conventional medical practitioners, and inadequate research on the efficacy of traditional methods hinder collaboration (Akin, 2023). Patients often face challenges in accessing a blended healthcare approach that leverages both traditional and modern therapies. These obstacles not only limit the potential for holistic care but also prevent indigenous practices from contributing fully to public health outcomes (Olayinka, 2024). This study seeks to identify the specific barriers to integration and to evaluate how indigenous healing institutions can be effectively incorporated into the modern healthcare system (Fadare, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the role of indigenous healing institutions in modern healthcare delivery.
To identify barriers to the integration of traditional and modern healthcare practices.
To propose strategies for improving collaboration between the two systems.
Research Questions:
How do indigenous healing institutions contribute to modern healthcare in Akure North?
What challenges impede their integration with conventional medical practices?
What strategies can facilitate a synergistic healthcare model?
Research Hypotheses:
H₁: Indigenous healing institutions have a positive impact on community health outcomes.
H₂: Regulatory and cultural barriers significantly hinder integration with modern healthcare.
H₃: Collaborative strategies will enhance healthcare delivery in Akure North.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the contribution of indigenous healing institutions to modern healthcare delivery. The findings will inform policymakers, healthcare providers, and traditional healers on the benefits and challenges of integrating indigenous practices with contemporary medicine. The research aims to foster a more inclusive healthcare system that respects cultural heritage and enhances patient care (Fadare, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing the role of indigenous healing institutions in modern healthcare delivery within Akure North Local Government Area. It focuses solely on local traditional practices and excludes urban or state-level healthcare interventions.
Definitions of Terms:
– Indigenous Healing Institutions: Traditional organizations or practitioners offering culturally rooted health remedies.
– Modern Healthcare Delivery: Contemporary medical practices and systems that provide healthcare services.
– Integration: The process of combining traditional and modern healthcare practices for improved outcomes.
